Doctors injected stem cells into a woman’s brain, hoping they’ll fight her cancer. Close to 23,000 Americans are diagnosed with brain cancer each year and more than half that number die. Some pioneering research may be changing that.

In California Wednesday that woman made medical history, the first human being to have embryonic stem cells injected into her brain to try to cure cancer. CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy met this pioneer patient and has an exclusive look at this ground-breaking procedure.

Jenn Vonckx has been leaning on her family a lot lately. Just three weeks ago doctors in her hometown of Seattle, Wash., told her there was nothing more they could do to treat the tumor in her brain. They gave her two months to live.

“It’s a short time when they tell you that – wow – you wouldn’t even believe how short it feels,” says Vonckx.

She didn’t know that near Los Angeles, Dr. Karen Aboody has been working on a revolutionary new cancer treatment for the very worst brain tumors called glioblastomas, the same kind Vonckx has.

Fresh concerns are being raised about the unauthorized stem cell treatments offered by private and international clinics following reports of patient deaths and cancer development.

RNL Bio, the Seoul-based biotechnology firm that has found itself at the center of the controversy, claims that there is no solid evidence to suggest that the recent deaths of two Korean patients were related to stem cells it derived from the adult cells of the patients.

Beside the deaths, another patient claims he found cancer developing in his neck just weeks after receiving stem cell injections at a clinic in China in August last year to treat diabetes.

The incidents were revealed by Democratic Party lawmaker Joo Seung-yong in a National Assembly audit of the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

RNL had allowed the patients to take their patient-specific stem cells to hospitals in China and Japan for treatment, as Korea has yet to allow the clinical use of such stem cells.

A stem cell-based therapy from Cellonis Biotechnologies combines the latest stem cell and immuno technology with the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Inger Marie Olsen from Norway recently concluded a cycle of the treatment in Beijing, and she has been in a stable condition since the first cycle in September 2009.

“For brain cancer patients after surgery, the combined DC-CIK and stem cell therapy from Cellonis Biotechnologies can be a very effective method in preventing cancer recurrence,” Dr. Dinggang Li said. “This is a new hope for cancer patients.” Li has been guiding the treatment of Inger.

“Inger’s general condition has improved very much,” he said. “She can now speak, move, eat and sleep much better, she has improved a great deal. I think her quality of life is almost back to normal.”

“I was diagnosed with cancer in 2005,” Inger said. “I had chemotherapy, radiotherapy and three surgeries, but the cancer still came back. A friend of mine read about this new therapy on the internet and the people of my town arranged a fund to help me come here.”

The Cellonis cancer therapy combines the latest research into cancer stem cells with the advantages of Traditional Chinese Medicine to create a unique cancer treatment. Dendritic cells, cultured and processed from blood taken from the patient’s body, are loaded with glioma stem cell antigens to create a vaccine that can activate the immune system to kill cancer cells as well as the cancer stem cells responsible for tumor initiation and recurrence. Another patient like Inger with glioma who undertook the treatment earlier this year, Guy Spavold from Canada, has been in stable condition since April with a good quality of life.

Are you a patient thinking about stem cell treatment? Or in the middle of it? Or at home recovering from it? Now there is a prayer book that is specifically written for you.

First, stem cells are immature cells that renew themselves for long periods through cell division.

Also, under certain conditions, they can be “tricked” chemically to become cells that do special things, like become the beating cells of the heart muscle or the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

Doctors around the world are already using stem cells to treat diseases. No one is really sure if the treatments are safe and effective (by scientific standards). But many desperately ill and disabled patients travel many miles and spend many thousands of dollars to obtain these treatments.

This book of prayers is for those patients. But it is also for all patients now and in the future who seek relief from their diseases and disabilities through stem cell-based therapeutics.

Each day, people all over the world are moved to worship and adore God, and to acknowledge that they are dependent upon God.

The Gospels mention many times that Jesus himself often withdrew to quiet, desolate places to pray.

As St. Augustine once wrote, “He wishes our desires to be expressed in prayers so that we may be able to receive what he is ready to give.”

This Treasury of Prayers has four inspiring sections:

● Prayers Before Stem Cell Treatment (Contemplation and Decision);

● Prayers While at the Hospital or Clinic;

● Prayers for Patients with Specific Diseases, Conditions and Disabilities

● Scriptural Readings for the Spiritual Comfort of Stem Cell Patients.

Experimental stem cell cancer treatments in the Dominican Republic and Germany failed to stem the progress of author Dominick Dunne’s bladder cancer. The 83-year-old former Hollywood producer died August 26. Like the late actress Farrah Fawcett, Dunne was treated unsuccessfully at Germany’s Leonardis Clinic in Bad Heilbrunn. The clinic nevertheless claims a high success rate. The U.S. FDA does not yet allow the use of stem cells to treat cancer because treatments have not proven universally safe or effective. “…[T]hose [countries] that are ahead of us in this area haven’t been able to show any real benefit, and I don’t think American patients are missing out on anything in this area,” said Dr. Stan Gerson, director of the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine of Cleveland, Ohio.
