Rockville, Md.-based stem cell company Neuralstem, Inc. (CUR) said on August 30 that it will work with the ALS Clinic at the University of Michigan to develop further proof-of-principle data to move the company’s spinal cord stem cells into patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
ALS is a progressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement.
As many as 30,000 Americans have the disease.
Neuralstem says its technology enables production of neural stem cells of the human brain and spinal cord in commercial quantities, and the ability to control the differentiation of these cells into mature, physiologically relevant human neurons and glia.
