Gene Therapy Market Seen Exploding Over Next Five Years

Revenues derived from gene therapy products and treatments are expected to reach approximately $125 million in 2006 and grow to a staggering $6.5 billion in 2011, according to analysis from Frost & Sullivan. (November 2005)
Gene therapy is generating excitement due to its potential in treating certain rare, inherited, or life-threatening diseases by inserting genes into the target cells of tissues or organs.
“Gene therapy research has made exceptional progress and benefited from the growing body of information on the specific gene defects that cause inherited disorders,” said analyst Raghunath Tantry. “Research by the Human Genome Project, for instance, reveals the tremendous potential of treating patients based on their individual genetic make up.”

Advances in the use of viral vectors (adenoviruses, AAVs, retroviruses, HSV, lentiviruses, and RNA viruses) and non-viral vectors (cells, liposomes, DNA and others) have reached a level of sophistication that is driving renewed venture capital investment and much commercial development, according to market analysts*.

As a result, gene therapy is indeed headed toward market approval and introduction by the end of this decade.

Despite setbacks, companies and academic institutions are aggressively developing gene therapies targeting single gene deficiencies, cancers, cardiovascular conditions, CNS conditions, tissue repair and other applications, with many in later stage clinical trials.

Since January 2003 we have been covering gene therapy research by companies and academic researchers in our biweekly newsletter Gene Therapy Research News.

GTRN covers the latest gene therapy research advances PLUS news from the growing list of companies pursuing gene therapy research and product development.
